Pure Instinct
from X-Or
Review by: Monica
I’ve always been a very curious cat and something I have always wanted to try is a pheromone cologne. Pheromones are chemicals that humans and animals release to attract a mate. While pheromones don’t necessarily smell like anything, our bodies still pick up on them and react. However, it’s important to note that scientists have never actually identified a human pheromone, though we’re pretty sure they exist. For this reason, I’ve always avoided purchasing a pheromone cologne on the basis that it must be a bunch of crap. But what if it isn’t?
An online adult shop that I really enjoy, X-or, carries a few pheromone products, including a cologne called Pure Instinct. The store does not claim these pheromones necessarily work, but explain that the cologne certainly has a very “provocative scent”. I decided it was worth a try!
The Pure Instinct Pheromone Oil is available for $14.95 in a .5 oz bottle (trust me, that’s enough) or you can actually get their bottle of “Pure Pheromones” for $69.95 in either a formula for women to attract men, or a formula for men to attract women. I decided to go with the cheaper option, in case I found it didn’t work.
When my oil arrived, I uncapped it and lifted it to my nose, curious to see what it smelled like. It smelled fruity with hints of watermelon, which I found disappointing as I absolutely can’t stand the smell of watermelon. But, I was determined to give this a try, so I applied some of the oil to the inside of my wrists and under the lobes of my ears on my neck. To my surprise, the smell changed on my skin from fruity to kind of musky. I spent the next hour sniffing at myself and trying to identify the scent, but words escaped me.
Smelling the perfume on myself had a rather strange effect. I found that it gave me moments of nostalgia, where the smell seemed familiar and yet I couldn’t put my finger on why. I felt really good smelling it and couldn’t help but lift my wrist to my nose all the time. I really couldn’t tell you if this is because it smelled good or if it’s because of the pheromones.
I decided to test the product out, wearing it several times on dates with my boyfriend, especially when we’d go to the bar. Unfortunately, I’m unable to report whether the pheromones had any effect whatsoever. When he did happen to comment on it, he told me how great I smelled, and thought the scent was familiar. He tried to name the perfume, thinking it was something he’d smelled before, but couldn’t put his finger on it. This seems rather similar to my experience with the perfume. But, beyond that, I can’t say he was any more or less animalistic than usual. Maybe a single person would have more luck testing the product out.
While I can’t say the pheromones attracted any more sexual attention for me, I can say that the scent is certainly provocative. An attractive musky smell that makes you feel good when it hits your nostrils is appealing enough for me. I think this product is worth the $14.95 and who knows, maybe you’ll find it does something for you.
Unfortunately, it appears that X-Or, the store that I received the cologne from, no longer exists!
